How SCRA Interest Rate Protection Works

The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) caps interest rates at 6% on debts incurred before entering active duty military service. This federal law applies to all branches of the military, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and Space Force.

What Debts Qualify for the 6% Cap?

  • Credit cards — All major issuers must comply, including Chase, Capital One, Amex, Discover, and Citi
  • Auto loans — Car loans and vehicle financing opened before active duty
  • Mortgages — Home loans, including VA loans opened before service
  • Student loans — Both federal and private student loans qualify
  • Personal loans — Unsecured loans and lines of credit

Lenders Offering Better Rates

While the federal SCRA caps rates at 6%, some lenders voluntarily offer even better rates. Chase offers a 4% cap on qualifying accounts. Navy Federal, Capital One, and Bank of America also offer enhanced SCRA programs—check with your specific lender.

How to Claim Your SCRA Benefits

  1. Gather your military orders showing your active duty start date
  2. Contact each lender in writing to request SCRA benefits
  3. Request both the rate reduction AND a retroactive refund of excess interest
  4. Follow up if you don't receive confirmation within 30 days

Frequently Asked Questions

The average servicemember saves $2,400-$4,800 per year with SCRA interest rate protection. Your actual savings depend on your loan balances, current interest rates, and how long you're on active duty. For example, a $15,000 credit card balance at 22% APR would save you $200/month when reduced to 6%.
The SCRA 6% cap applies to credit cards, auto loans, mortgages, student loans, and personal loans that were opened BEFORE your active duty start date. Debts incurred after entering active duty are covered by the Military Lending Act (MLA), which has different protections.
Yes, joint debts with your spouse qualify for SCRA protection. Individual debts in only your spouse's name generally do not qualify unless they can show the servicemember's income was the primary source for repayment.
SCRA interest rate protection lasts for the entire duration of your active duty service. For mortgages, protection extends for one additional year after you leave active duty. You must request benefits within 180 days of leaving service.
Yes! Under SCRA, lenders must forgive (not defer) interest above 6%. This means you're entitled to a retroactive refund of excess interest charged since your active duty start date. Use our Retroactive Refund Calculator to see how much you may be owed.
