The Biggest Rate Drop

Credit cards often have the highest rates - sometimes 24% or more. SCRA drops that to 6%, giving you the largest percentage reduction of any debt type.

Major Card Issuers

All major credit card issuers must comply with SCRA. Most have dedicated military departments that process claims quickly.

Have Multiple Cards? Claim Each One

SCRA applies to every pre-service credit card independently. 5 cards means 5 claims and 5x the savings. Don't forget store cards, gas cards, and old cards with balances.

How to File Credit Card Claims

  1. List all your credit cards

Pull your credit report or check your wallet. Include cards you don't use but still have balances on.

  2. Note which were opened before service

Only cards opened before your active duty start date qualify. Check your card agreements or call the issuer.

  3. Contact each issuer's SCRA department

Call the number on the back of each card and ask for "SCRA" or "military benefits." Most have dedicated teams.

  4. Submit orders to each issuer

Each card issuer needs their own copy of your military orders. Submit via their preferred method (fax, mail, or upload).

  5. Verify rate reduction on each card

Check your next statement or online account to confirm the rate dropped to 6% on each card.

Don't Forget Store Cards

Retail store cards (Target, Amazon, Best Buy, Home Depot, etc.) are credit cards too. They often have the highest rates (25-29%) and are frequently overlooked. Check your wallet and credit report for any store-branded cards.

Retroactive Refunds

If you've been paying more than 6% since entering active duty, you may be entitled to a refund of the excess interest. This is automatic with most issuers once SCRA is applied - they'll credit your account or send a check.

The refund covers the difference between what you paid and what you would have paid at 6%, going back to your active duty start date (or when the card was opened, whichever is later).

Common Questions

Does my spouse's card qualify? Only if the service member is the primary cardholder or joint account holder. Authorized users don't qualify for SCRA on someone else's account.

What about new purchases? The 6% rate applies to your entire balance, including new purchases made after the rate reduction. You can continue using the card normally.

Do I need to reapply each year? No. Once approved, the 6% rate continues until you leave active duty service. Some issuers may request updated orders periodically.
