Synchrony Bank is one of the largest issuers of store credit cards in the United States, powering cards for Amazon, PayPal Credit, Care Credit, Lowe's, Sam's Club, and over 100 other retailers. If you have any store credit card, there's a good chance Synchrony is the issuer.

As an active duty service member, you're entitled to the 6% interest rate cap on any Synchrony card you opened before entering active duty. Given that many store cards carry rates of 25-30%, this can save you hundreds of dollars per year per card.

How to Request SCRA Benefits

  1. Call the dedicated SCRA line
    Contact Synchrony's Military Support team at 1-866-834-3205. They have a dedicated team for SCRA requests.
  2. Provide your information
    Have ready: your account number (or the last 4 digits), full name, Social Security Number, and active duty start date.
  3. Submit military orders
    Fax your orders to 1-866-867-9586 or mail to:

  4. Request retroactive refund
    Ask specifically for a refund of interest charged above 6% since your active duty date.
  5. Verify on next statement
    Check your next statement to confirm the rate reduction and any refund applied.

What to Expect

Synchrony generally processes SCRA requests within 14-30 days. Once processed:

  • Your interest rate will be reduced to 6%
  • Any excess interest since your active duty date should be refunded
  • The refund is typically applied as a statement credit
  • The rate cap remains in effect for the duration of your active duty

Pro Tip

If you have multiple Synchrony cards (common since they issue so many store cards), you may need to submit separate requests for each card. However, some representatives can process multiple accounts at once if you ask.

Common Issues

"I didn't know Synchrony issued my card" - Check the back of your card or your statement. If you see "Synchrony Bank," this guide applies.

"They said my card doesn't qualify" - All pre-service debts qualify. If the account was opened before active duty, it's covered under SCRA.

"They only reduced the rate going forward" - You're entitled to retroactive refunds. Call back and specifically request a refund of excess interest since your active duty date.
