SCRA Contract Cancellation
Cell phone, gym, internet, home security—cancel service contracts without early termination fees when you receive military orders.
Contracts You Can Cancel
Under 50 U.S.C. § 3956, service members can terminate certain service contracts without penalties when they receive qualifying military orders. This specifically covers:
Cell Phone
Internet/Cable
Satellite TV
Home Security
Gym Membership
Satellite Radio
SCRA specifically covers "telecommunications services" and contracts for services at your residence. Gym memberships and similar contracts may be covered under state military protection laws, which SCRA Saver also handles.
Requirements
- You must provide written notice of termination
- Include a copy of your military orders
- Orders must show deployment, PCS, or activation to a location where you can't use the service
- Service terminates 30 days after notice is received
Cell Phone Contracts
Cell phone contracts are explicitly covered under SCRA. You can terminate without paying:
- Early termination fees (often $175-$350 per line)
- Device installment balances (if you return the device)
- Remaining contract obligations
